I know you all have seen the photos ... and so have I, but unless you see it "for real" you just can't even imagine the devistation and destruction that a tornado can do! Unlike anything I have ever seen in my life time. My heart goes out to all those who were left homeless, it is unimaginable!
"There but for the grace of God, go I" Thank you!
I am hoping it warms up again before the lambs start to arrive ... Just waiting now on a gate from Tarter Gate to come in ... We live but mere miles from them, but have to order from Tractor Supply!
Funny, and then I received an e mail for a very nice lady in CT. asking me did I have an order with Premier 1? yes, why? Well, they sent it to her! How nice was that of her to track me down and tell me that. Sheep people are so kind! Thanks Liz!
Okay, if you are not bored to death yet ... I will continue ... This weekend was so cold! And this morning there is a bit of snow on the ground! Come on now ... My daffys are blooming!
A cold morning 30 degrees when I woke up to the wind chimes, sounding like a church organ being played ... at 4 a.m. A great day to have a nice hot cup of Jo ...
I love coffee ... my morning coffee ... a cup of coffee wakes me up ... makes my day go better. Hubby and I limit ourselves to one large cup a day. So we go through a pretty good amount of it. And in the warmer weather we drink ice coffee ... And then I like to mix up a batch with my special spices to grub up my stuff ... it is great on fabric and paper ... Anyway, back to the coffee, I don't know if you remember a few months back, well, more than a few now, coffee prices went through the roof ... So we use to drink Dunkin Donuts coffee ... ( being a Yankee you drink that brand, and well, hey, it's just good coffee!) So we went from DD to Maxwell House to Walmart brand ...
That is when I noticed Walmart had something the others did not have ... a black lid!
Right about now you are saying " And? So?" And yes, a black lid ... which means, not blue, not clear, but a black usable lid ... Ahhhhhh .... So now, it was a challenge ... You see hubby didn't want them for nails and screws and such, because they were to big and they weren't the metal (aluminum) ones.
Now, I am big into recycling have been for a long time ... so if it has plastic on it, in it, or around it, I am going to do my best to take it off and recycle it ... plastic is a great thing ... but, really nasty in the
environment ... it kills me to see it on the roadsides, in the parks ... when it cost NOTHING to recycle it!
Okay, sorry for that sidetrack ... So I sat a couple of these cans in my crafting room ... and looked at them for quite some time, about 6 months or so ... And it came to me ... These would look great in a cupboard ... I mean really, they are stackable come in different sizes ... and well, they are free with the coffee.
See ...
Measure height and circumference of can.
Put white glue on paper.
Take a damp sponge brush and spread glue.
Place on can an roll ... I wanted wrinkles in mine. That is why you see them.
Rub wax on paper or not ... You don't need to.
Paint with paint full strength, I use brown. I went thin in some spots ... I liked the light and the dark.
Apply label of choice. I wanted a little contrast between the label and the can,so I added a small amount of stained burlap. I applied label to the burlap, and then applied glue to the burlap and centered it on the can.
You can see that I made a small one as well. This one was bit more of a challenge. I think they look pretty good in my cupboard. And the best part ... They are still useable!
Supplies:
Coffee cans
glue
labels of your choice
paint
optional supplies:
burlap
wax
This is a project I have been thinking about for some time now, the small cans were a challenge because of the indents that go all the way around the can, and the seam in the back. I remedied this with a thin sheet of paper on the seam and added glue into the indents and let dry. That raised them up to level. Do you have to do this? Well, that is your choice, I did not want to see the rings in the can ... This is a very easy project, cost is minimal and that depends on the labels ... you can purchase or search the Internet for freebies ... I'm thinking craft room ... one for buttons ... one for twine ... one for ... well, you get it ... I hope you enjoyed this tutorial ... And remember re think
re purpose, recycle.
Note*** I do these tutorials for those of you who enjoy the craft of making your own primitives ... As I do and have for so very many years. I get nothing for this. But what I do have to ask now is, if you do a tutorial, please at the least give me credit, do not change something and call it yours. It has been brought to my attention that this is happening and has happened on more than one occasion.
So, just give credit where credit is due.
Thank you!
and
Enjoy
Teri

Your cans look fabulous!! Too bad I don't drink coffee, LOL!!
ReplyDeleteYou are exactly right--devastation from a tornado is 100 times worse being seen in person. Tornadoes ripped through here in 1985--we drove around to see the damage--when we saw a heartbroken family standing looking at their destroyed home we went home. We felt awful gawking at them in their pain. My heart goes out to all affected. Great tutorial--we don't drink coffee, but I'm sure a lot of readers will make use of your info. Jan
ReplyDeleteNeat way to recycle! Can't wait to see the lambs! Warm Blessings!~Amy

Hello, Teri:
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for another awesome tutorial. I have this darn coffee cans all over the craft room. This is another make over that we can do with hardly any reason to make a trip out to buy something for the tutorial.
I love it! I'd like to insert your link for this in one of my next posts. Unless you'd rather not, I think it's good and stinkin' that someone would claim your tutorial as theirs.
Hugs,
Susan

ReplyDeleteLove these Teri! You are right about the weather here being crazy!Hugs,Jen
ReplyDeleteI had a chuckle - I've been known to buy a certain brand because of the future use I see for the container! But I hadn't thought to dress up a container as prettily as you have.
ReplyDeleteWonderful tutorial Teri. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteBecky
So glad to hear that you are all OK out there..should be a bit warmer, hopefully in time to help with lambing...
ReplyDeleteI don't drink coffee, but the cans/containers Mom sends up I use for feed cans or potting soil! But I did like the blue pincushions!
Looking forward to seeing more of your hooked rugs!
What a wonderful idea!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the tutorial Teri!
Prim Blessings

Love the coffee can tutorial. I will try this for sure. I just joined your blog and hope you will drop by and join me too. My blog is all about farm life, decorating, cooking, animals, and lots more. Hope to see you there. I also made a comment about the little sheep pillow on another post of yours. I would buy one of those. My Dad used to raise sheep.
ReplyDeleteGreat project...but you all must have different kinds of coffee cans in your parts....I love DD, but can't afford it on a regular basis (alas, I drink more than one large cup per day) and so buy the large red canisters of Folgers and they have those funky finger or hand indents in them....Hmmmm... will have to look more closely at what's out there. Thanks for the ideas! Robin
